Frequently Asked Questions

Or at least asked occasionally.

Or once.

Or at least I hope someone asks

Do you have a gear list?

No. But I could make one! You are free to ask about anything specific, but I have a healthy microphone collection, an extensive guitar and bass collection (acoustic and electric), a number of great amps and pedals, a Motif 88-key keyboard and a baby grand piano, a custom house drum kit, and plenty of good outboard gear including class-A pre’s, tube pre’s and compressors, Apogee converters, and so forth. And plenty of little percussion and melodic goodies too.

Oh and the latest updated Pro Tools subscription with plenty of plugins of all kinds.

Do you have a price list for your services?

No. Truly every project is different. Some are big-budget with funding. Others I do gratis if for a charitable or community cause. Some people need 4 hours in studio and we’re done, while some I’m producing a whole record over the course of a year. I may charge the former person full hourly price. I certainly wouldn’t charge the latter by the hour. If you want a ballpark, it’s nice to get $50/hour or $400 for a 10-hour day for producing/recording at my home studio. For just playing, it would be similar, or a flat fee per track per instrument. But it’s all flexible to your needs and project.

Does all of your gear come with your studio? What about your playing, will you play guitar and keys as part of the hourly or flat fee?

The gear I have at my studio does come with it, you’re welcome to use what you like. As for my playing, again that depends. If I’m producing your independent record I’m happy to play parts for you. If someone else is producing, you’d pay me for my parts but there would be no additional engineering fee. I don’t do a whole lot of straight engineering (where I’m not producing and also not playing) - I’ll make exceptions sometimes, but mostly I like to be more involved.

Can you record/play/produce long-distance?

YES! I’ve produced, co-produced, mixed, co-written, and played on many many projects in the last 4 years where we were not in the same room, or state, or country (and in some cases never met in the flesh!)

Will you write or co-write with me?

Sure, I’m happy to either lend opinions and expertise as pertains to your songs or songwriting if you ask for it (often that just falls under producing and not really writing.) But I love the collaborative process so if you need a co-writer for your music, or need a writer for composed music or theme songs etc. let’s talk!

Have you recorded with people I’ve heard of?

YES! Recorded, mixed, edited, even production/stage/tour managed for people you’ve very likely heard of - including some of the greatest voices in rock history. However the niche that I find I’m strongest at, and makes me the most fulfilled, is working with atypical musician/artists - those that have sat on their own songs for years but never had the courage to record them; those that have gone to the “wrong” producers previously and ended up with not much to show for it and not much left in their wallet; those who don’t have a band, don’t know if they need one; or just don’t know the first steps towards achieving their goals. That’s where I come in. That said if you’re a super famous rock star already you’re welcome to call.

Do you have a detailed resume?

Not really, but I’ll be constantly updating the site with highlights, things I’m proud of, artists I’ve worked with and achieved great results with, and so forth. If you have specific questions you can ask. But a little more about me - I’m classically trained in piano and guitar (looong time ago), I’ve also played bass, mandolin, ukulele, drums and drum programming, and sung lead and backing vocals on projects that were released (in addition to my own bands with whom I’ve released many albums over the years.) I’ve composed music for TV, film, and social media, written and co-written in many capacities - and also have a degree in music recording, but more importantly many years experience.

So you’ll work with any paying artist?

Not necessarily. I’ll talk to anyone though. Phone, or over coffee, etc. I’ll always take the time to find out what you’re wanting to do. When it comes to my home studio I really only work with people that have been referred by friends and clients - I don’t have total strangers over. But if you’re a total stranger… maybe you won’t be for long! So let’s talk. And then let’s ease in slow - try a song, gauge the working vibe, and comfort level, the musical compatibility - hey I may be the wrong producer for you, and vice versa. I’ll never ask anyone I’ve never worked with before for a large flat fee or a contract of any kind.

Do you offer any sort of video packages?

As it happens my wife is a photographer and videographer (Mika Larson Photography), so artists who want anything from photo or video documentation of recording sessions to full-on music videos - we can talk about doing that in-house with her. She’s also a cellist, just sayin’.

How about lessons?

I’ve been known to give private lessons in guitar, songwriting, or home recording/home studio consultation. I’ve also been music director at summer camps for the better part of 2 decades and love working with kids to help mold the next generation of rockers! Reach out if you want to know more about any of this.
