Remembering JC Gafford

I had worked with singer/songwriter JC Gafford for almost exactly 10 years to the day when I heard the news that he had passed. I produced his debut full-length, and we were in the middle of a double-album. We were exchanging ideas about the latest mixes just days before his untimely death.

I had the honor of music directing his celebration of life last weekend, and I’ll be posting some video of the amazing band, made up of his friends and musical supporters, but for now, I just want to look back at a track off that debut record Love Too Much, and remember a song he was especially proud of called “I’m Not The Man.”

This is because he had never done his own BG vocal stacks before - most of the record has the brilliant Peggi Blu handing BG and harmony duties, but this one seemed to need a male voice on the ooh’s and aah’s, so he went for it - and nailed it, cuz that’s just what he always did.

I’m on guitar, our mutual friend Nick Burns, who introduced us in the first place, is on drums - and Paulie Cerra, from Joe Bonamassa’s band, on the sax!

You can find the album on your favorite streaming sites. Stay tuned for info on his new record - which I will find a way to complete! Meanwhile enjoy this:
