NEW RELEASE: Helen Huff “Change of Heart”

I met a very talented singer/songwriter/pianist named Helen Huff when she was in a teen leadership program at Camp Ben Frankel, where I was a music and songwriting Artist in Residence in 2021. We exchanged information, and two years later I got a call from her - now a freshman at college, and working independently on her first recordings.

She had cut some demos at a Chicago studio, and realized she could use a producer’s guidance to see them through to release-quality.

The demos were quite impressive - cut live with a three-piece band - all live piano and vocal, no click track, no overdubs - old school. There were however some sonic issues that presented a real challenge - and that’s the kinda thing I’m always up for!

2020 really demonstrated how much you can do without being in the same place, and in that spirit we worked between Pasadena and Chicago on overdubs, new parts, mix ideas… and the result is the lovely and unpredictable “Change of Heart” her debut single, available at Bandcamp now, and elsewhere soon.

I ended up playing lead guitar (it was meant as a placeholder for her sax player, but we ended up alternating solos!), bass, and percussion programming, and mixed the track. For anyone who’s interested in the details of the whole process, you can always reach out.

But hey, writing about music is boring! Listen NOW, and consider purchasing a download to support an independent artist. https://helenhuff.bandcamp.com/track/change-of-heart
